ABOUT DEPRESSION: Over 350 million people worldwide suffer from depression.
While medications may help manage symptoms of depression, many people are not satisfied with the results from standard drug therapy due to lack of efficacy or intolerable side effects.
Major depression is a serious medical illness.
STAR*D Study shows the likelihood of achieving remission declines with each successive treatment attempt. It also showed that side effects and discontinuation from medications increases with each attempt. After three prior medication failures, the chance of achieving remission from another medication trial falls to 6.9%.
While the exact cause of depression is unknown, the leading scientific theory is that it is caused by an imbalance of the brain’s neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers that send signals between brain cells. Brain activity is significantly reduced in depression.
Depression impacts relationships, work, finances, physical health and quality of life.
While antidepressant drugs work for many people, some still do not receive adequate treatment. For these people depression can still be debilitating. People deserve an alternative.
ABOUT TMS: Uses a targeted pulsed magnetic field, similar to what is used in a MRI machine. TMS stimulates areas of the brain that are under-active in depression. TMS treats at the right source every time. TMS is an FDA-cleared non-drug treatment for depression which is most appropriate for people who have not benefited from prior medication or would like to consider a non-invasive treatment. It is only available by prescription.
With TMS, many people’s depression symptoms significantly improved or went away after 4 to 6 weeks of treatment with NeuroStar. Only NeuroStar TMS has been proven durable over 12 months. Study results a year out from treatment have shown 67.7% of patients continue to show a response to TMS, and 45.1% of patients have complete remission of their depression.
TMS is safe and easy to tolerate. Free from side effects often associated with antidepressant medications, TMS is a safe, effective therapy that can be conducted right in the doctor’s office. The most common side effect is pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site - these events are transient and usually occur only during the TMS treatment course and often do not occur after the first week of treatment. With medications, common side effects include insomnia, headaches, blurred vision, dry mouth, fatigue, weight gain, nausea, GI distress, sexual dysfunction. There is a very rare risk of seizure associated with the use of NeuroStar TMS (<0.1% per patient).
Over 1.5 million NeuroStar treatments have been performed. Many of the top psychiatric hospitals provide NeuroStar TMS. It is covered by most major insurance companies (including Medicare and Tricare).
WHY NEUROSTAR?: NeuroStar is the #1 TMS choice of doctors and is the only treatment that offers: contact sensing to ensure patients receive the full prescribed dose every time; contoured coil designed to fit the shape of the patient’s head; and 3D laser assisted positioning for repeatable and accurate treatment. NeuroStar machines are made in the USA.
Treatments occur in our office and last approximately 19 minutes. Patients remain awake and alert during treatments. The therapy is provided 5 days a week for 4-6 weeks followed by a 6 treatment taper over 3 weeks.
Patients recline comfortably in the spa-like treatment chair, awake and alert. The small, curved device containing the magnetic coil rests lightly on the patient’s head. NeuroStar delivers focused magnetic stimulation directly to the target areas of the brain. After each session, patients may immediately resume normal activities.
