What is TMS?

TMS is a non-invasive, non-drug treatment that uses magnetic pulses to stimulate

underactive areas of the brain involved in mood regulation. It’s FDA-approved for

treating major depressive disorder (MDD) in adults who haven’t responded to

antidepressants.

How does TMS work?

During TMS session, you sit comfortably while a magnetic coil delivers focused pulses

to the prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain is linked to mood. These pulses help

“reawaken” neural activity, potentially leading to symptom relief. No anesthesia is

needed and you can resume normal activities immediately after treatment.

What is the treatment schedule?

A course of TMS includes 36 sessions 5 days a week for about 6-10 weeks. Each

session last approximately 19-30 minutes, depending on your personalized dosage.

Who is a good candidate for TMS?

TMS is ideal for adults with MDD, anxiety, and OCD symptoms who haven’t found relief

from medications or experience intolerable side effects.

What are the side effects?

The most common side effect is mild to moderate scalp discomfort or headache,

typically subsiding after the first week. The risk of seizure is very low-less than 0.1%

per patient.

Is it covered by insurance?

Yes, most major insurance plans cover TMS for treatment-resistant depression.

Coverage for OCD and anxiety symptoms associated with depression may vary, so

check with your individual plan.

Do I change my normal routine?

No, please continue taking medications as prescribed, maintaining the same meal and

caffeine intake, and getting the same amount of sleep each night during the 36

sessions.

Disqualifications for TMS:

• History of seizures or epilepsy

• Non-removable metallic implants in or near the head and spine
